Dr. Suchi Saria
Celebrating this week's Woman in AI : Meet Dr. Suchi Saria, who co-founded the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) to encourage the development of transparent and credible AI systems in healthcare.
From founding partners such as Mayo Clinic, CVS Health, Google, Amazon and Microsoft to regulators such as the FDA and OSTP, CHAI brings together a diverse group of 1,500 healthcare providers, researchers, and tech companies to develop consensus over AI evaluation protocols in healthcare.
Dr. Saria got both her M.Sc. in Computer Science and her PhD in AI from Stanford University – under the supervision of Dr. Daphne Koller, who is a co-founder of Coursera and founded insitro.
Here is a look at her career trajectory:
▶ Held roles at IBM, Goldman Sachs and Microsoft Research
▶ Advised at companies including Sanofi, Halcyon Health and PatientPing
▶ Co-founded Bayesian Health, a health AI startup focused on developing predictive and preventive healthcare tools, in 2018
At Bayesian Health, Dr. Saria led work on TREWS – an early warning system for patients of sepsis - which was able to achieve a reduced mortality of 18.2%. It was named as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2023.
According to Dr. Saria, the journey of Bayesian Health began with her nephew tragically passing away from sepsis – this acted as inspiration for her to find the startup.
Dr. Saria is also Associate Professor at The Johns Hopkins University, where she is the founding director of the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare.
